Construction engineering in the field of concrete and reinforced concrete

A. A. Gvozdev Research, Engineering Design and Technological Institute of Concrete and Reinforced Concrete (NIIZHB) as a part of the Research Center of Construction provides engineering services in concrete and reinforced concrete construction. NIIZHB is the largest specialized institute, which traces its history to 1927.

High scientific potential and professionalism of the employees, state-of-the-art equipment allow the institute to deal with the tasks of any complexity meeting the interests of construction industry enterprises, construction and design organizations. NIIZHB provides a wide range of engineering services, such as:

- Design engineering, including:

  • Carrying out of work at the stages “Front-End Engineering Design”, “Design” and “Detailed Design Documentation”

  • Engineering and development of reinforced concrete elements

  • Engineering

  • Design of refractory insulating concrete constructions and development of compositions of dry refractory mixtures with further output of products (including cellular foam concrete).

  • Participation in design, deformation analysis to ensure crack resistance, waterproofing, integrity of enclosing constructions of substructure (without using an extra waterproofing)

  • Preparation of the Method Statements when working with self-stressing structures and self-stressing concrete

  • Development of regulations on structural construction and concrete curing.

  • Analysis and development of fire-resistance and fire-safety systems for buildings and structures when designing.

  • Fire-resistance and fire-safety calculations of reinforced concrete structures.

- Expert evaluation of designs

- Development of product quality management systems

  • Correction of self-stressing concrete composition on certain materials.

  • Self-stressing concrete quality control according to control samples.

  • Concrete mixture quality control according to the flow.

  • Concrete compression strength control in a “free” state.

  • Concrete strength control in a “bound” state.

  • Control of concrete bending tension strength.

  • Control of self-stress.

  • Control of waterproofing.

  • Quality control of construction of cast and pre-cast reinforced concrete (heavy and light concrete);

  • Quality control of protective cover systems at the operated facilities.

- Inspection of the condition of buildings and structures

- R&D monitoring of design and construction

- Study of concrete and reinforcement properties, including:

  • Study of short-time and long-time concrete characteristics when subject to aggressive environment.

  • Assessment of concrete resistance to corrosion on various (including cementless) binding and filling materials.

  • Development of methods to increase concrete resistance to aggressive environment effect and temperature and humidity climatic effects.

  • Classification of aggressive effect of gaseous, solid and liquid medium to concrete and reinforced concrete.

  • Study of chemical additives in concrete, including assessment of their impact on concrete and reinforcement resistance to corrosion.

  • Study of short-time and long-time characteristics of reinforced steel when subject to aggressive environment.

  • Study of corrosive resistance and physical and mechanical properties of pre-stressed composite non-metallic reinforcement, including stability in alkalis.

- Development of new types of concrete and technologies of use thereof. The developments of the Institute include concrete with specified operational characteristics, including of extra strength classes В60-В90, and self-compacting, self-recovering and decorative (architectural) concrete, fiber-reinforced concrete, and chemical resistant concrete. High strength concrete and concrete with high resistance to salt and freezing have also been developed for road surfaces. One of the promising directions is to ensure the application of self-stressing concrete and concrete with compensated shrinkage.

- Development of new types of high-strength reinforcement, including non-metallic one for reinforcement of concrete structures

- Development and improvement of production technologies for built-up structures and products

- Testing and certification of cements, filling materials, additives, concrete mixtures, concrete), protective covers for concrete (together with Certification Center of the Research Center of Construction JSC).

The Institute offers the following process lines for implementation:

  • for production of architectural concrete;

  • for production of solid-cast porous concrete;

  • for production of continuously reinforced concrete.
